Comic Book Character of the Week: Blue Marvel

Blue Marvel

Blue Marvel, real name Adam Brashear, was a standup citizen (graduated magna cum laude at Cornell University, joined the marine corps, a veteran of the Korean War with two silver stars) that received his powers in a scientific experiment that exploded in his face. Brashear was attempting (with his friend Conner Sims) to harness Anti-Matter and bridge the normal world and the Negative Zone, using a Negative Reactor.
An unexpected explosion occurred, and both men mutated: Adam becoming Blue Marvel (an anti-matter reactor with various superhuman abilities), and Sims becoming an energy being known as Anti-Man.

Since then he served the country and became a full time superhero, saving the country from many threats. In 1962 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom as he was asked to retire by John F. Kennedy as citizens had discovered that he was black, and America was too racist to accept a black superhero.

Marvel accepted and completed one last mission where he saved the Earth from the herald of an alien armada that wished to enslave them. He later left his Medal of Freedom on the Moon, where he met the Watcher. While there, the rest of the alien armada arrived and Blue Marvel defeated them, saving the earth. The government used this to fake his death and commissioned a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to monitor him, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who became his wife and mothered his children.

He returned as a superhero when his friend Anti-Man sought to eliminate racism in the world (a noble cause warped by his insanity) and humanity along with it. Anti-Man defeated the Avengers, so Tony Stark and Reed Richards tracked down Marvel and made a plan to stop Anti-Man. Their battle left Blue Marvel’s wife dead, and Anti-Man drained of his energy and his form permanently dissipated.

Since then Blue Marvel has fought the likes of King Hyperion (an interdimensional being who had killed alternate dimension Thors, Hulks, Sentrys, and even an alternate dimension Galactus), Sentry and the Avengers, and even Shuma-Gorath.

Marvel was able to defeat King Hyperion in a slugging match, fly through Shuma-Gorath’s physical shell, nearly destroying it, and able to knock Sentry into orbit with just one blow. He was also able to repair Monica Rambeau’s energy form (that had been in disarray since she was hit by Proxima Midnight’s spear) and temporarily power her up so that she could kill Shuma-Gorath for good. After this fight, he was named an Avenger by Luke Cage.

Blue Marvel’s abilities are superhuman strength, superhuman durability, anti-matter absorption, a healing factor, super speed, flight, enhanced perception, and anti-matter projection. His strength has been shown and said to be on par with the likes of Sentry, Hulk, and Thor (said by Namor and shown in his fights with Sentry and King Hyperion), as has his durability (also shown in fights with Sentry and King Hyperion, as well as having a hydrogen bomb explode in his hand and him being unfazed).

He’s shown the ability to manipulate anti-matter to form forcefields around others and even to enhance the power of his punches. In fact, it’s been said that one gram of anti-matter is equivalent to the energy of the hydrogen bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.

Blue Marvel is now a full-time superhero again, and one of the most powerful on Earth.
