Comic Book Character of the Week: Tangent Superman (Harvey Dent)

Tangent SuperMan

Harvey Dent was a normal man who suddenly developed powers after a freak accident. His mind began to evolve; he developed telekinesis, telepathy, and other powers to achieve nearly anything he wanted. This was further accelerated by the Nightwing group (a government mandated program) trying to create more superhuman using the Miraclo Solution. They tested it on an entire town, and Harvey was the only survivor.

As The SuperMan, Harvey began growing in power and began using his powers to solve problems and make the world a better place. He grew from taking on criminals, thugs, and slumlords to taking on and defeating actual super villains.

Using his great intelligence and ever evolving mind, Harvey recreated the Miraclo Solution and gave it to his fiancé so that she may join him on her adventures. Many thought that she died from the procedure, but in fact she lived and gained powers similar to SuperMan’s (but not equal).
Eventually he and others were hunted down by the Justice League of America (a group meant to hunt down super powered citizens after realizing their danger) and their leader Ultra-Humanite. Harvey defeated Ultra-Humanite in a battle on the moon and secretly captured him to use later on for his own purposes.

Due to Ultra-Humanite’s powers (EMPs and such), the world’s communication systems and energy grids were down, and in the chaos, Harvey sought not to bring the world back to normal, but change it for the better. The first step of this vision of his was SuperMan appearing before the United Nations leaders and informing them that HE was running the word now. At first SuperMan started with centralizing the world’s resources and decision making all to meet his line of thinking. Next he would make a law against meta-humans showing or displaying any type of superhuman power, and a Purge of those who would speak out against his rule.

Harvey captures The Joker

He would eventually set up The Question, which could monitor all computers and data in the world, and would face his old allies: the Secret Six, who opposed his rule. SuperMan would strike back by capturing The Joker, interrogating her, and then killing her when he was done. Due to his willingness to kill anyone who stood in his way and his intentions to strip people of their liberty, his wife left him and would no longer be a part of his reign. So he took on another wife in PowerGirl.

Events would happen where Green Lantern John Stewart from “New Earth” or the Mainstream Post-Crisis world came to his planet, and SuperMan would incapacitate him and read his mind, learning of the planet and universe/dimension/continuity from which he came.

SuperMan would take John’s power ring and travel to New Earth where he discovered corruption, misused resources, crime and so on and sought to change it for the better as he had his home world.

In his journey to right the wrongs of New Earth, Harvey would battle Superman (mainstream Clark Kent), Flash, Batman, and others as well as the heroes resisting his rule from his own home. SuperMan (Harvey) gathered the world leaders as he had done in his own home planet and informed them that he was taking over. He was met with resistance, but used his allies and one Ultra-Humanite to aid him in his goal. Ultimately he was defeated due to the combined forces of heroes from both worlds as well as his own wife weakening and distracting him long enough for Superman to land the finishing blow to incapacitate him.

Tangent SuperMan battling New Earth Superman

Throughout his battle, Tangent SuperMan showed telepathy and telekinesis great enough to control an entire air force of planes (one with a nuke inside of it), to easily control the radiation fallout after the nuke, to easily defeat Superman in a fight, to stop a Green Lantern ring from working and read a Green Lantern’s mind, and so on. He also displayed teleportation, the ability to read the mind/talk to machines, and has shown the ability to “erase people from existence” most likely with telekinesis.

His telekinesis also allowed him to stop the heart and possibly brain of Superman, stop and disable the shields and powers of another assailant and to alter himself and grant himself superpowers.

Overall he was possibly the most powerful Superman (or SuperMan) ever seen and had good intentions even if his actions were extreme. In fact his last words before being locked away (in a special gateway that held Ultra-Humanite before him) were “I only wanted to help.”
